2024 is a milestone year as we reach the fifth year in recognising the work that is done by Australian comics creators. It was another great year for Australian comics and we are proud to share the long list of Notable Australian Graphic Novels from 2024.
The list recognises the best comics and graphic novels by Australian creators selected by the ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics team. To be eligible, all these titles were published in 2024, have at least one key writer or artist who is Australian and are widely available in stores and library suppliers.
The Junior category this year saw a wide array of publishers getting involved in graphic novel publishing. Affirm Press and Oni Press appear in the long list with two really fun graphic novels that hold great appeal for young readers. Allen & Unwin is present with two titles, including an Indigenous Australian graphic novel, When the World Was Soft by Juluwarlu Group, Alex Mankiewicz and Anh Do’s first graphic novel. Hardie Grants published the Hello Twigs series last year as they prepared for the lunch, this year, of Figment, a new imprint dedicated to graphic novels. 2024 also saw the adaptation of Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s Library from Penguin and James Foley’s third book in the Secret Agent Mole, published by Scholastic.
This year in the YA category we saw a more varied selection of titles. 2024 was a bigger year for publishing as we saw the return of Sarah Winifred Searle, C.S. Pacat, and Chris Gooch. We also have more titles from Tom Taylor and Stephen Kok, who continue to publish regularly. And, in more indie graphic novels, we had the publication of Follow the Gut and Laura J. Carroll’s debut graphic novel focusing on the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. It’s great to see the rise of diverse voices, titles and publishers in the YA graphic category in 2025.
Similarly, the adult category offers a wide range of titles. Transhuman and Fractured Shards offer new volumes of their science fiction, crime and action series. Ryan K. Lindsay returns with a gripping, hard boiled story, with the right amount of weird and Mat Groom surprises with an epic and philosophic science fiction graphic novel, The Singularity, which is also a metal album from celebrated composer Bear McCreary. In more indie graphic novels, Scribe published the call to action 12 Rules for Strife and the introspective exploration of migration connection to the ancestral land and family in The Island Where We Left Our Ancestors. Finally, Meriam and Christian Carnouche return with a heartfelt and emotional exploration of loss, grief and connection to both family and land.
Overall, 2024 was a great year for Australian graphic novels and we’re very pleased to see a wide range of publishers and creators. It’s great to see established creators continuing to publish internationally and, also, new voices and creators with indie and debut publications.
As a group we recommend all these titles for inclusion in library collections. We will also announce the ALIA Graphic Notables, i.e. the best of the best for 2024, as selected by our panel of librarians, next month on June 11.
