ALIA Graphic Year in Review 2024

by | Feb 8, 2025 | yearly roundup | 0 comments

This year, we begin by looking backwards – to all we have achieved in 2024 and all of our favourite reads during that time. That’s right, it’s time for ALIA Graphic Wrapped.

Start 2025 on a high note by reading (or re-reading) all of last year’s best graphic novel and comic offerings.

What we have been up to this year, besides reading? We have been busy keeping the national (and international) comic-reading library community up-to-date with the latest news, new releases and information.

Here are some of our biggest achievements:

  • Published 26 podcasts on all things graphic novel and comics news and new releases, inclusive of 11 Creator Chats with our favourite Australian comics creators, which you can also watch on YouTube.
  • Reached our 100th podcast episode since we began recording in 2020.
  • Facilitated 2 Webinars, the immensely popular Drawing Attention: Comics and Censorship featuring Melbourne based cartoonist Briar Rolfe, Eisner award-winning cartoonist, journalist and editor Eleri Harris, and author-adventurer Ryan Estrada, discussing the many and varied forms of censorship graphic novel creators, readers, and library communities face; and the more recent Comics and Libraries: The Pros and the Comic Cons, featuring library staff and other comic con organisers Sarah Hopkins and Sabina Wills (Comics Extravaganza), Fel Jeges (King Con), Dennis Cahill (Comic Conversations), and Stacey O’Brien (Comic Gong) on their tips and tricks to running an engaging comic-related library event.
  • Discussed graphic novels and comics through 9 online book clubs on diverse topics such as disability, metafiction, and STEAM.
  • We have shareded numerous blog posts, including sharing our Notable Australian Graphic Novels of 2023.
  • We supported a librarian being part of the Comic Arts Awards of Australia’s judging panel for a third year in row.
  • Expanded our social media community to include LinkedIn, as well as our usual haunts on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Feel like joining us and learning more? You can express interest in joining ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics here, or get in touch here. Come to the dark side, we have excellent comic recommendations…
