July 2024 Roundup

by | Jul 24, 2024 | monthly roundup, webinar | 0 comments

Collections, eComics and webinars, oh my! This month, we are excited to share some news from incredibly big names in graphic novels and comics including a new collaboration between Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud, as well as a rundown on a couple of digital comics vendors Comics Plus and Hoopla to inform your collection. Earlier this month, we also presented our Drawing Attention: Comics & Censorship (ALIA Graphic Webinar), the recording of which will be published in August. We can’t wait to share our lively discussions on promoting and protecting graphic novels in libraries with you all!

Speaking of the webinar, we also shared some of our highlights from Drawing Attention: Comics & Censorship in our July Roundup Podcast, which you can find here and wherever you listen to podcasts. Thanks so much again to our incredible speakers and presenters, Briar Rolfe, Eleri Harris, and Ryan Estrada for your time, insights, and willingness to rally around the incredibly important – but also uniquely vulnerable – medium of graphic novels. Each creator also has something new in the works and we will be sure to keep you in the loop as the new titles from these wonderful creators are released.

We are also incredibly thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a second webinar this year, so keep an eye out for more information in the coming months.

NEWS

  • Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud are joining forces! What will these two titans produce together? The Cartoonists’ Club, a graphic novel about making comics. This is excellent news. For more information on the announcement check Publishers Weekly here. And over at Popverse, Raina Telgemeier shares 3 comics that formed her (and one that “ruined” her life). You can read all about it here
  • As the wave of book challenges and bans continues in the U.S., librarians continue to share resources and strategies. Brigid Alverson has the latest on Publishers Weekly. Brigid Alverson has also spoken to Jeff Trexler, director of the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund, who offers an update on recent development in regards to book bans. You can read it on Publishers Weekly here.
  • We recently had Ryan Estrada speaking on our webinar and we mentioned his new graphic novel, No Rules Tonight, is going to be published in October. This is a follow up to Banned Book Club and is also co-written with his wife Hyun Sook Kim. You can read an interview to both of them on Publishers Weekly here.
  • First Second now has a sister with new imprint 23rd Street Books starting to publish graphic novels for adults next year with a great roster of creators. Definitely one to follow. More information on Publishers Weekly here.
